Samsung Electronics has begun one of the most ambitious corporate deployments yet of OpenAI’s workplace tools, giving broad swaths of its staff access to ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex in a move that underscores how quickly generative artificial intelligence is becoming embedded in the routines of global manufacturing giants.
The rollout, according to multiple reports and company statements, extends across Samsung’s work force in South Korea and throughout its Device eXperience, or DX, division worldwide, the arm of the company that oversees products like smartphones, televisions and home appliances. OpenAI described the effort as one of its largest enterprise installations to date.
The decision is notable not simply for its scale, but because it comes from a company that had once become a cautionary tale about the risks of generative AI in the workplace.
From restraint to expansion
In 2023, Samsung restricted the use of outside generative AI tools after employees inadvertently uploaded sensitive internal information to ChatGPT, raising alarms about data leakage and corporate security. The episode became an early example of how quickly enthusiasm for AI could collide with the realities of protecting proprietary information.
Since then, Samsung has invested in internal alternatives, including its own AI system, Samsung Gauss, while moving more carefully than some rivals on external tools. That posture now appears to be changing.
Samsung said in a June 11 announcement that, beginning June 12, employees in the DX division would receive official access to external generative AI tools at work, including ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. The company said the expansion followed a pilot program involving roughly 2,500 employees and would be accompanied by security training and governance controls.
The broader reports that ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex are being deployed to all Samsung Electronics employees in South Korea, and to the DX division globally, suggest that Samsung is moving beyond a controlled experiment toward a companywide shift in how office work, software development and product planning are done.
A major prize for OpenAI
For OpenAI, Samsung’s adoption is another sign that its business strategy is increasingly centered on large organizations rather than consumer novelty alone.
ChatGPT Enterprise is designed for companies seeking stronger data controls, administrative tools and integration into workplace systems. Codex, OpenAI’s coding-focused product, is meant to assist with software tasks such as writing code, debugging and automating development workflows. In a conglomerate like Samsung, those uses could stretch across engineering, customer software, internal operations and product testing.
The Samsung deployment would place OpenAI deeper inside one of the world’s most influential electronics companies, and in one of Asia’s most technologically sophisticated corporate environments. It also adds to a series of large enterprise wins in the region, where companies have increasingly embraced generative AI not as a side experiment but as a foundational productivity tool.
Why South Korea matters
The rollout also reflects a broader pattern in South Korea, where artificial intelligence has been met with unusual intensity by both businesses and the public.
Recent reporting has described South Korea as one of the world’s most AI-enthusiastic markets, a result of its highly connected population, advanced digital infrastructure and a business culture shaped by fierce competitive pressure. AI tools are increasingly visible in everyday life there, from public services to consumer technology, and major companies have been under pressure to show they can move quickly without losing ground to overseas rivals.
That environment helps explain why Samsung’s decision carries significance beyond one company. When South Korea’s best-known corporate champion adopts external generative AI at scale, it signals to the rest of the country’s industrial sector that the balance between risk and reward may be shifting.
For exporters and manufacturers, the pressure is especially acute. Generative AI is no longer confined to chatbots and marketing copy; it is being tested in product development, software maintenance, design support, documentation and internal knowledge work. In industries where speed can determine market share, even modest productivity gains can matter.
Questions about the next phase
Even so, important details remain unclear.
Samsung’s own statement firmly confirms access to external generative AI tools for the DX division, but it has not publicly provided a full breakdown reconciling the reported scope of all Samsung Electronics employees in Korea and DX employees worldwide. Nor has the company disclosed exactly how Codex will be used across non-software functions, what technical restrictions will govern uploads and prompts, or whether its semiconductor division, known as Device Solutions, will soon receive similar access.
There is also the question that hangs over nearly every enterprise AI deployment: whether the tools will produce measurable gains rather than simply a burst of experimentation. Companies across industries have promised efficiency improvements from generative AI, but public evidence remains uneven, especially in complex organizations where security, compliance and workflow redesign can slow adoption.
What is clearer is that Samsung has crossed an important threshold. After spending years trying to contain the risks of outside AI systems, it is now moving to normalize them inside the company. In doing so, it is making a bet shared by a growing number of corporate leaders: that the greater danger may no longer be adopting generative AI too quickly, but adopting it too slowly.
