Meta said on Tuesday that it would begin rolling out a new “Incognito Chat” mode for Meta AI in WhatsApp and the standalone Meta AI app, the company’s clearest attempt yet to turn privacy into a competitive advantage in the intensifying race for consumer AI assistants.
The feature, announced May 13, is designed so that conversations are processed in what Meta described as a secure computing environment that even the company cannot read. By default, the chats are not saved and disappear when a session ends, according to Meta. The rollout has begun and will continue over the coming months.
The move reflects a broader shift in the artificial intelligence industry, where companies have rushed to promote chatbots as companions for everyday questions but have faced persistent unease over what happens to the sensitive information users type into them. People increasingly turn to AI systems for advice about health concerns, financial decisions, workplace problems and personal relationships — categories of conversation that can quickly become more intimate than a typical search query.
Privacy as a product pitch
Meta is effectively arguing that a stronger form of privacy could persuade users to rely on its assistant more often, particularly inside WhatsApp, an app long associated with encrypted personal messaging.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s chief executive, said the company’s new mode was built so that no conversation data is stored on its servers in a readable way and that Meta itself cannot access the content of those sessions. He has framed the offering as a step beyond the standard privacy controls that have become common across AI products.
That distinction matters. Many popular chatbots, including rivals from OpenAI and Google, let users turn off chat history or limit how conversations are used for training. But in most cases, the provider can still generally access prompts and responses in some form for operations, safety or abuse monitoring unless additional protections are in place. Meta is seeking to position Incognito Chat as something stronger than a simple “don’t save this” setting.
How Meta says it works
The new mode is built on WhatsApp’s “Private Processing” system, which Meta has previously described in technical documents as relying on a Trusted Execution Environment, or TEE. In such systems, data is handled inside an isolated hardware-backed environment intended to shield it from outside access, including from the operator of the service.
Meta has said the architecture uses attestation tools, encrypted connections and third-party components intended to improve transparency and routing. In its technical explanation, the company said the aim was to allow AI requests to be processed without making them available to Meta or WhatsApp, while preserving privacy expectations closer to those users already associate with encrypted messaging.
For now, the feature is limited. Incognito Chat is text-only, while image and voice capabilities are still in development. Meta has also said a related feature called Sidechat with Meta AI is planned for WhatsApp later.
The trust question
Whether Meta’s new approach changes user behavior may depend less on marketing than on whether outsiders are persuaded that the system works as advertised.
That is the central unresolved issue. Meta says the safeguards will be backed by audits, transparency logs, bug bounty programs and outside review. But users are still being asked to trust the company’s implementation of a highly technical privacy promise — one that arrives from a business long criticized by regulators and privacy advocates over its handling of personal data.
The company’s challenge is not simply building protected infrastructure; it is convincing people that “even Meta can’t access it” is a claim that can be independently tested and continuously verified.
That scrutiny is likely to be especially intense because the stakes are higher for AI than for many other digital products. A private conversation with a chatbot may reveal not just contact lists or browsing habits, but a person’s fears, medical symptoms, financial stress or private conflicts, all distilled into natural language.
Why it matters now
Meta’s announcement comes as technology companies are trying to push AI assistants deeper into daily life, moving them from experimental tools into messaging apps, search products and mobile devices. As those assistants become more embedded, trust has become a practical barrier to adoption.
In that sense, Incognito Chat is not just another product update. It is a signal that the next phase of consumer AI competition may hinge not only on speed and intelligence, but on whether companies can persuade users that some of their most personal exchanges will remain truly private.
For Meta, WhatsApp offers a natural testing ground for that bet. The app’s global reach and reputation for encrypted communication give the company a ready-made audience for a privacy-focused AI tool. But the promise also sets a high bar: if Meta wants privacy to be the reason people choose its assistant, it will have to show that the protections are more than a slogan.
