Six months later, that promise is under mounting strain.

Fresh reporting has raised questions about whether the project — one of the most prominent examples of the government’s new AI Growth Zone strategy — can secure the electricity it says it will need, meet its timetable, or deliver the benefits described to local residents. In villages near the proposed development, optimism has curdled into suspicion, with some homeowners saying they fear disruption, the loss of green-belt land and pressure to sell property long before any economic gains materialize.

The scrutiny is focused on Lanarkshire, east of Glasgow, where the government in January designated a site for a 500-megawatt AI datacentre campus led by the Scottish firm DataVita and the American cloud-computing company CoreWeave. The plan was billed as a transformational investment: 3,400 jobs, a £543 million community fund and more than 1 gigawatt of privately wired wind, solar and battery power intended to run the facility without drawing heavily on the wider grid.

But documents and accounts reported in recent days suggest that privately, both developers and government officials had acknowledged significant doubts about the project’s power arrangements. The prospect that the site could be built by 2030 and fueled entirely by dedicated renewables now appears far less certain than public statements suggested.

Local Fears in Newarthill

In Newarthill, a village near the proposed site, residents say the development has come to feel less like a regeneration plan than an encroachment.

According to local accounts, representatives tied to energy proposals linked to the wider scheme contacted households late last year to discuss land and property. Residents said they were told of nearby solar farm plans and offered inducements including solar panels, tree planting or cash. For some, those approaches sharpened a sense that decisions affecting the village were being made around them, not with them.

The concerns are practical as much as emotional. People worry about the prospect of battery storage and solar infrastructure near homes, the loss of open land, construction disruption and what all of it could mean for house values. Some fear that the promised jobs may never arrive at the scale implied, leaving the community to absorb the costs of a project designed principally to serve national industrial policy.

That anxiety reflects a broader tension running through Britain’s push to expand AI infrastructure: the datacentres needed to train and run advanced AI systems require extraordinary amounts of power, land and network capacity, and the places chosen to host them often face burdens that are far more immediate than any future rewards.

The Power Problem

The Lanarkshire scheme was presented as unusually self-sufficient. Ministers said it would rely on more than 1 gigawatt of dedicated renewable generation — enough to support a datacentre complex on a scale rarely seen in Britain. Supporters portrayed that as a way to square two politically sensitive goals at once: building AI capacity quickly while avoiding an already congested electricity grid.

The problem is that such arrangements are difficult to deliver even under ideal conditions.

Large datacentres operate around the clock and need highly reliable power, while wind and solar generation are intermittent and often require substantial backup, storage or grid support. Building a private-wire system on the scale described would require not only generation but also land, planning approvals, transmission arrangements and time. Industry specialists have long warned that datacentre announcements can race ahead of the slower realities of power infrastructure.

The doubts in Lanarkshire matter in part because of the scale-up involved. DataVita’s existing operation in the county is modest by comparison — around 24 megawatts, with previous expansion plans described as reaching 40 megawatts. Moving from that to a 500-megawatt AI campus backed by more than 1 gigawatt of dedicated renewables would represent a leap of a different order entirely.

That disparity has fed skepticism among campaigners and energy analysts, particularly in Scotland, where hyperscale datacentre proposals have already prompted calls for a moratorium. Opponents argue that such projects could materially increase electricity demand, consume scarce grid capacity and trigger local environmental conflicts, while creating fewer long-term jobs than headline numbers suggest.

A Test of Britain’s AI Growth Zones

The government’s AI Growth Zone policy was designed to answer a real problem. Britain wants to attract the infrastructure needed for advanced AI — not just start-ups and research labs, but the hulking datacentres that provide computing power — yet developers face chronic obstacles in securing energy connections, planning approvals and suitable land.

By designating favored locations, ministers hoped to streamline those barriers and signal that Britain was open for AI investment at scale.

Lanarkshire was meant to be the proof of concept.

If that flagship project falters, it risks undermining confidence in the wider strategy. The issue is not simply whether one development encounters delays; large infrastructure schemes often do. It is whether official claims about power supply, delivery dates and local economic benefits were more aspirational than bankable from the start.

That question has become more pointed since the troubles surrounding Stargate UK, another splashy AI datacentre proposal. In April, OpenAI paused its involvement in that project, citing regulation and high energy costs. Subsequent reporting suggested that a large share of the investment figures previously touted by ministers had been more hypothetical than concrete. Together, the episodes have cast a harsher light on the gap that can open between political announcements and deliverable infrastructure.

The Stakes for Communities and Climate Policy

What happens next in Lanarkshire will be watched far beyond one stretch of Scottish countryside.

For ministers, the project is bound up with a larger economic argument: that Britain can still compete in a world where AI capacity is increasingly tied to access to power, land and capital. For developers, it is a test of whether they can persuade the public that enormous datacentres can coexist with local interests and climate commitments.

For residents, the stakes are more immediate. They want to know whether the green space around them will be industrialized, whether their homes will be affected, and whether the benefits held out to them are real or contingent on phases that may never arrive. Even the touted community fund carries caveats, with government materials indicating that payments depend on capacity actually coming online.

The Lanarkshire project has not been abandoned, and its backers continue to describe it in expansive terms, including near-zero water use and a renewable-powered buildout. But the burden of proof has shifted. After months of soaring rhetoric about jobs of the future and clean-powered AI, the central question is now a simpler one: whether the promises can survive contact with the facts on the ground.
